Storage and Returns of Medicines

Storing Medicines

When you receive your medication make sure you try to keep them in their original container if possible. Also keep them out of sight and reach of any children. The best storage place is in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight.

If refrigerated storage is required always follow the directions on the label and store in the fridge at home. When travelling keep in mind the storage conditions and a cool box/bag may be required. Any item that requires fridge storage will have clear instructions on the label – so keep an eye out for this.

Disposing Medicines

Unopened, unused and out-of-date medicines should be returned to pharmacies for disposal.

Inhalers should not be put in the waste bin as they contain gases which are harmful to the environment. Instead they can be disposed of at any pharmacy.

How to dispose of unwanted medicines

Return them to a pharmacy or chemist for safe disposal.
Do not flush medicines down the toilet.
The cardboard box that houses the blister packs can be recycled, as can any paper inserts.

Any Controlled drugs must be returned to a pharmacy for safe disposal.

Most pharmacies will be unable to take back sharps (needles) so please see your local council website for more information on return on these items.

If you are unsure of how to safely store or dispose of your medications feel free to contact us where one of our team will be more than happy to assist.
